Welcome

Welcome to the homepage of Shrewsbury BJJ. Shrewsbury BJJ is a club teaching the art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu run by BJJ Brown Belt Casey Jones and BJJ Blue belt Paul Greaves. Both have studied directly under BJJ Black belt Karl Tanswell and have traveled and competed extensively to further their knowledge of the art. Shrewsbury BJJ is currently the only club in the area offering qualified instruction in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, for a full CV of coaching and tournament experience please email and we will be more than happy to oblige.

What is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu  also known as BJJ and Gracie Jiu-Jitsu  is a martial art, combat sport and a self-defense system that focuses on grappling and especially ground fighting. The art was derived from the Japanese martial art of Kodokan judo in the early 20th century, which was itself developed from a number of schools of Japanese jujutsu in the 19th century.

It promotes the principle that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend themself against a bigger, stronger assailant by using leverage and proper technique—most notably by applying joint-locks and chokeholds to defeat the other person. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu can be trained for sport grappling tournaments (gi and no-gi) and mixed martial arts (MMA) competition or self-defense.

If you’re new to the sport

Just turn up and give it a go. The club is small and friendly and you will find all the help you need to adjust. Because of the size everyone is helpful to beginners and you won’t get lost in the pack. For your first session it is advisable to wear a t-shirt & tracksuit bottoms that you don’t mind being stretched and pulled about, and beginners may get separate instruction until they have an understanding of the basics.

Risk assessment

For a copy of our risk assessment, updated March 2010. Please ask to see updated signed copy kept at the club if you wish.

Costs

Taking up any sport costs money, and BJJ is no different. If you intend to take up the sport after you have tried it out in a rubbishy t-shirt, you will need to buy a Gi as it is fit for purpose and will save you on clothes in the long run. A basic Gi will cost you around £50 including belt and can be got from many sports outlet stores or can be ordered through the club (ask Casey for details).

Current session prices are £5/session but your first session will be free so you can try the sport out. You have the option of paying in bulk which will work out significantly cheaper than session-by-session payment. If you are new to the sport you will obviously not want to pay up-front in case you decide it’s not for you, and we understand this, so it isn’t necessary to cough-up immediately – you can pay a session-by-session rate and if you decide to continue then pay the rest. Prices cover the cost of (a) coaching, (b) room hire (c) grading.

If you intend to pursue the sport once you have tried it out then you will require insurance the cost of insurance is currently £20/Year.

What is grading?

The process of grading is an assessment on the student’s ability at BJJ. It comprises of a theory component and actual performance at Belt level. The grades obtained allow the student to wear different coloured belts that are synonymous with the martial arts.

What do I need to take part?

In order to take part in grading and competition, it is necessary to obtain insurance that must be renewed on a yearly basis. The cost of the grading itself is covered in your class fees so there are no hidden charges.
